Commercialization of teff growers and determinants in west Ethiopia: Double hurdle model analysis

Promoting commercialization of agricultural production is a cornerstone the rural development strategies Ethiopia and smallholder farming not yet adequate enough to enable farmers be profitable. This study was designed analyze farmers’ teff in Guduru District, Western Ethiopia. Two-stages sampling procedure followed select 154 producer from four randomly selected kebeles. An interview schedule used collect household survey data during 2016/2017 season. The Household Commercialization Index assess levels market participation. Double Hurdle Model identify key factors that influence commercialization. results revealed about 78% sampled sold year 2016/2017. model result indicated education head, family size, land holding allocated teff, farm output, participation off/non-farm activities, lagged price, access information cooperative membership were found significantly probability output market. Intensity determined by sex age labor distance nearest Based on findings, recommends government should give emphasize system, planning program, productivity improving measures, communication facilities institutional services, enhance female headed households roads.
